CURRENT THERAPY

SAME THERAPY EMPLOYED IN HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI (1945)

FROM 1945 TO DATE: No U.S.governmental research agency has successfully completed a project to produce a therapeutic agent for the treatment of individuals subjected to radiation injury caused by nuclear attack, accident, radiation therapy...

Yet unit at the Naval Medical Research Institute NMRI, isolated and partially purified a Radiation Ameliorating Factor from spleen (RAFS) which produced a marked increase of survival of animals exposed to near-lethal doses of X-radiation.
(Katz, S. and Ellinger,F, "Isolation of a Radiation-Mortality Reducing Factor from Spleen" NATURE, 197, 397, 1963).

Small mammals (controls) exposed to near-lethal dosages of X-radiation exhibited a survival rate of 350 survivors/1000 for untreated controls; whereas, the RAFS treated subjects resulted in 650 survivors/1000.

In 1962 this project was terminated due to the activation of the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI).
